God needs to be forgiven, not given to.
The older brother became wroth with anger and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, “Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never even gave me a young goat to celebrate with…”
Rest is forgiveness.
To enter into God’s rest is to enter into forgiveness. Not merely God’s forgiveness of you. But your forgiveness of God.
The writer of Hebrews knows that if there was ever anyone that needs forgiveness, it’s the Hebrew God.
When you are not at rest, you need to forgive. And the only thing you need to forgive is God. When you are not at rest you are condemning your existence, which is nothing else but God. Could you forgive God? Could you forgive God that suffering and dying is the only way of man? Jesus did. And He lived. And He is rest.
